December 10, 2017 By: Brian Hamilton – WEST POINT, MS – Since 1965, the magazine has produced biennial rankings of “America’s Best Golf Courses.” Golf Digest recently published an article titled “America’s Best New Courses 2017,” which featured Mossy Oak.
“To have Golf Digest, one of the world’s most prestigious golf publications, to rank us as one of the best new courses in America is incredible,” Mossy Oak director of sales and marketing Gary Billington said. “To have that type of exposure and to have that type of recognition really shows what all went into the planning of the course and how good our staff does in maintaining the course. We’re just ecstatic.”
The course opened in September 2016 as a sister course to Old Waverly, but construction on the course began a year prior to that.
It was built on an old dairy farm called Nob Hill and built by renowned golf course architect Gil Hanse.
“(Hanse) really likes to pick the lay of the land and wrap the golf course around what’s given to him,” Billington said. “He essentially just routed the course along those nobs and those hills, which made it a minimalistic style course.”
Billington said the layout, along with other features, is what makes the course special.
“We offer something that a lot of courses around here don’t, which is a caddy program,” Billington said. “Each group that goes out will have one caddy with the group. We also have walking caddies, as well, if people would like to take a walking caddy and have them carry the bags for them.”
Billington said he believes that the distinction will be great for not only the course, but also for the city of West Point.
“This will be going out to millions of subscribers and it will be read by many different kinds of people,” Billington said. “My hope is that it continues to grow the area of West Point. We’ve been growing incredibly lately with the opening of Yokohama, the expansion with the Golden Triangle area and Mossy Oak opening up. It’s just one of those things that we hope continues to improve and helps the city of West Point and the Golden Triangle.”
